Smart integrated modular school extension for Tender College in IJmuiden

A school expansion with Fire-X units as classrooms, connected to the existing school building.

A fully equipped solution for temporary classroom space with Fire-X modular units and selected 360° Services, designed to provide a secondary school with comfort and safety, allowing learning to continue without compromise.

 

Rapidly deployable modular classrooms for a secondary school

Tender College in IJmuiden needed extra classrooms on short notice, without disrupting the daily school routine. The expansion had to be quickly deployable, but above all feel like a natural part of the school. 

In collaboration with the school board Dunamare, Algeco came into play, partly due to previous successful projects within the educational group. Algeco subsequently realized a modular extension with 16 Fire-X units, specifically designed for educational environments. 

What makes this project special is the way the new spaces are connected to the existing building. No separate annex, but additional space that logically integrates into the daily use of the school.

Smartly connected to the existing school building

To arrive at the right solution, various design scenarios were explored during the process. Initially, it was considered to connect an existing unit via a corridor structure. On the advice of Algeco, a fully integrated solution was ultimately chosen where the new units are directly connected to the school building.

The modular extension thus serves not only as an extra classroom, but also as a new entrance. This way, the extension does not feel like a temporary addition, but as a full-fledged extension of the school.

To facilitate smooth traffic flow in practice, extra space was provided in the transition area, so that students can comfortably pass each other, even during busy moments between classes.

360° Services: comfort, safety and technology at educational level

A temporary classroom must offer the same quality as permanent construction. To make the modular extension fully operational, various 360° Services. This way, the school could rely on one fixed partner.

  • Comfort and acoustics: improved sound insulation and partition walls ensure soundproof classrooms. The micro-perforated ceiling panels contribute to good acoustics.

  • Indoor climate and health: CO2 meters monitor air quality. Together with our climate system, this ensures a pleasant temperature and fresh air.

  • Fire safety and alarm systems: the Fire-X units meet strict fire resistance requirements. The fire alarm is also connected to the fire detection system of the school building, so that alerts are followed up immediately.

Through this integrated approach via 360° Services, coordination was simplified and the school remained maximally relieved.

About the collaboration

In close consultation with the school, various options were carefully weighed. One aspect was central to this: “The expansion had to feel like a logical part of the existing building.” This feeling is very strong within the school.
“We are very happy that it is integrated into the existing structure. That has really worked out well.”

The pace also played a role. The installation went faster than initially expected, which was exciting at first. “I didn't know that so much could be accomplished in such a short time,” the management shares.

Equally important was how the final result feels. Not only technically but especially in terms of experience. “The appearance of the interior and the feeling that the building has make the difference. They are pleasant spaces where teachers consciously choose to give lessons.”

Even after completion, the contact remained direct and solution-oriented. “From design to installation and aftercare, we are pleased with that.”
